The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has quickly become one of 2026’s biggest cinematic events. The energetic, family‑friendly sequel expands the Mushroom Kingdom into the cosmos while continuing Nintendo and Illumination’s wildly successful partnership. Released globally on April 5, 2026, the film arrived during Easter weekend and immediately powered up the box office with record‑breaking numbers.

The movie debuted to $130.9 million domestically over its first three days and $190.1 million across its first five days, making it the largest domestic opening of 2026 at the time of writing.    Internationally, it collected $182.4 million from 80 markets, bringing its global opening total to $372.5 million.

These numbers place it among the top animated openings of all time, and one of the strongest video‑game‑adaptation launches ever.

The sequel takes Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and into outer space, drawing inspiration from the Super Mario Galaxy games. The trailer highlights Mario and Luigi navigating cosmic environments, Rosalina being introduced, with Yoshi and Bowser Jr. also making an appearance.

In the trailers, strange disturbances are rippling through the galaxy, pulling Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad into a series of star‑strewn worlds inspired by the Super Mario Galaxy games. We see Mario teaming up with Rosalina, who appears to play a key role in explaining the cosmic threat and guiding the heroes through unfamiliar planets, floating islands, and gravity‑bending environments. While the exact cause of the galactic chaos remains hidden, the promotional footage makes it clear that the stakes are higher, the environments are bigger, and the journey will challenge the characters in ways the first movie never did.

The film continues Illumination’s signature animation style, bright, energetic, and packed with visual humor. It also expands the world in ways fans have been hoping for since the first movie’s release in 2023.

However, critics have been mixed. Some reviewers felt the film was “frenetic” or lacked deeper character development, while others appreciated its playful tone and faithful nods to the games. Eurogamer, for example, gave it two stars, calling it “quite bad, for quite interesting reasons.”

Rotten Tomatoes is especially filled with negative reviews, hitting a tomatometer of 43%. One commenter stated, “While this new offering does not mess too significantly with the franchise’s proven winning formula, there’s just enough new characters and in-jokes to keep the massive Mario fanbase engaged and enamoured throughout.”

Despite this, audiences, especially families, have embraced the movie enthusiastically, echoing the trend seen with many animated game adaptations.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a bright, energetic sequel that delivers exactly what fans expect, like cosmic adventure, familiar characters, and a celebration of Nintendo’s most iconic franchise. While critics are divided, audiences have made their verdict clear, this movie is a hit. See it in theaters now.
