Events, such as club expo, offer students at SUNY Oneonta an opportunity to connect and find their place on campus. With more than 200 clubs to choose from, 8,012 events throughout the school year, and countless students getting involved both on and off campus, students often find their places and their communities here. From intramural sports teams, to cooking clubs, to accounting clubs, there’s a place for everyone’s hobbies and interests here.
I had the chance to talk with the Vice President and the creator of one of the book clubs here on campus. The Love and Literature club is a book club that focuses on reading primarily romance books, which is something that the campus did not have before the spring of 2025. The creator, Jannelle Reid, is a junior student here at SUNY Oneonta.
“Starting Love and Literature has taught me so much about the hard work that goes into making a club. However, it’s all worth it in the end, when you get to meet so many new people and start friendships. I started this club as a way for fans of romance books to have a space to express their love for the genre and to meet new friends. I’ve met some of my friends now through Love and Literature. I’m also excited to be staying on my e-board being the vice president! Love and Literature is going to be so great this semester with the events and the books we will be reading this semester. While it may seem overwhelming, students are not only able, but encouraged, to start their own clubs as well. Multiple different clubs on campus are started and led by students, for students, just like the Love and Literature club.
She started the club in spring of 2025, and the idea attracted many book-loving members. When I asked Janelle what it was like starting a club on campus, this is what she had to say. “Starting Love and Literature has been so rewarding, while I do a lot of behind the scenes such as organizing events and doing a lot of other behind the scenes work, and while I will say it’s challenging, it has taught me how to be a leader and take initiative for my club to collaborate with other clubs and make sure that we’re hosting events that people want to see. I’m so proud of Love and Literature and I can’t wait to see what this year holds.”
