The trial of 36 year old Lindsay Clancy, a labor and delivery nurse from Massachusetts who has been accused of killing her three young children in 2023, appears to be coming to an end as the jury reaches their verdict. Clancy pleaded not guilty on reasons of insanity due to postpartum psychosis. Prosecutors further disputed this claim.
Clancy was a nurse who worked at a Boston hospital delivering babies. Clancy expressed that after the birth of each of her own children, she experienced heavy postpartum anxiety and sought help from medical professionals who prescribed her over a dozen different medications. Following the birth of her third child, she expressed that she began to hear voices that urged her to end not only her own life, but the lives of her children as well.
Clancy further acted on this while her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands on January 24, 2023. She strangled her three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, to death in the basement of their home using exercise bands. They were discovered by their father when he returned from his errands. He first discovered Lindsay on the lawn as she had attempted suicide by jumping out of a second story window. This was an attempt that would leave her paralyzed from the waist down. Patrick asked where the children were, to which she replied, “they’re in the basement”. Patrick then called 911 and explained what had happened to the dispatcher. That phone call was later used as evidence in court.
Lindsay remained in custody until the court took her case to trial. Her case has captured the attention of many all across the world. While Lindsay never denied her involvement with the killing of her children, her lawyers claim that she should not be held to a murder charge due to the severe mental health struggles that she faced.
This five week long trial has captured the interest of many people across the world, and has taken social media by storm with the controversial opinions people have surrounding the case. Multiple groups of women that support Lindsay have shown up in front of the courthouse wearing pink shirts in support for Clancy.
The court’s jury was set to reach their verdict by Thursday, September 3rd. To everyone’s surprise, on Friday, September 4th, the judge declared a mistrial after her attorney’s last minute appeal since the jury had failed to reach a unanimous verdict. Following this decision, the court set a status conference in place for September 29 to discuss the case further and to ensure that the case is progressing legally by state laws.
The court remains unsure as to when the case will return to the stand.
