On April 25th, at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, gunshots were fired in the main security area, resulting immediately in the evacuation of the President, the First Lady, the Vice President, and Cabinet members in attendance. The Correspondents’ Dinner is an event to raise funds for journalists covering the presidency. This was Trump’s first Correspondents’ Dinner of his second-term presidency.

The suspect was identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old man from California. Allen allegedly ran past security, one floor above where the event was being hosted. He was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and knives. The shots fired hit one Secret Service Officer. This officer was wearing a ballistic vest and is expected to recover from injuries.

Allen made his first appearance since the incident in D.C’s federal court. In court, Allen was charged with attempting to assassinate the President, carrying a firearm across state lines to commit a felony, and discharging a firearm in a crime of violence. These crimes, if charged, would result in a life sentence.

Allen left California on April 21st, traveling by train to Chicago. On the 24th, he left Chicago and arrived in Washington where he checked into a Hilton Inn outside of Washington Hill where the dinner was hosted.

Shortly before the attack, the suspect emailed family members apologizing for what he was about to do. Allen did not mention Trump by name, but heavily criticized his actions. Allen expressed that “[he experiences] rage thinking about everything this administration has done.” He also wrote that he is “no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes.” This message was sent to the New London Police Department by the suspect’s family, warning them of the incident two hours before it took place.

Allen was known for being an intellect, having studied at the California Institute of Technology and interning at NASA. An ex-volleyball teammate expressed surprise at learning Allen was the suspect in the attack, since Allen was known as being “the gentlest…” on the team.

This is the third assassination attempt against President Trump. The first attempt was in July 2024, when Trump was speaking in a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. He was shot and wounded in his right ear. In September of that year, there was another attempt in West Palm Beach, Florida. While Trump was golfing, a suspect was found with a rifle in the bushes nearby. These frequent — and increasingly close attacks — raise questions of whether the President is being adequately protected. This event also raises questions about public attitudes toward the President, and what the rise in violent crimes suggests about the state of America. President Trump has commented that during the attack, he “wasn’t worried,” as the Secret Service team quickly evacuated everyone from the scene.

As the investigation continues, Allen faces the possibility of a life sentence. Beyond this attack, this event has raised concerns of presidential safety and the possibility of growing hostility in the United States.
