In a few short weeks the 2024 election for president will occur and our leading candidates have been working hard at their campaign. As many already know, President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed his Vice-President, Kamala Harris. This election has the potential to make history if Harris wins in November. If she does, Harris will become the first female president of our country. According to an article by BBC, Harris is leading in the polls with a 2% percent lead over Trump.

With Harris’ lead being small, it could lead to a close race on Election Day. So far we’ve only seen one debate between the candidates last month, but the numbers in the polls didn’t change much afterwards. In the Electoral College system, the U.S. uses 538 votes total and a candidate needs at least 270 to win the election. Out of the fifty states most vote for the same party but some have been recorded to vote for the opposite. These states are called battleground or swing states. Right now neither candidate has a decisive lead in any of the states as the numbers are close.

According to the BBC Georgia, Arizona and North Carolina have switched who’s leading multiple times since August but currently Trump has their favor. On the other hand, Harris has gained the Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin favor. Which means both Trump and Harris will narrow in on those states and to win the final favor for the election.

CNN wrote an article about Trump making a stop at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania where he worked behind the fryer as part of the fact that Harris said she also worked at a McDonald’s when she was younger. However, he did wish her a happy birthday.“Yes, I would say happy birthday, Kamala,” Trump said. “I think I’ll get her some flowers. Maybe I’ll get her some fries… I’ll get her a McDonald’s hamburger.”

According to The New York Times, Harris has visited Georgia churches as a way to reach the communities and gain their votes. At this moment in time it’s hard to predict who will win the election. Neither candidate has managed to hold a solid lead in the battleground states yet. With that being said, make sure the time to vote is now. Time to fill out those ballots, Oneonta!
