Every year, television enthusiasts tune in to the Emmy Awards to see if their favorite series or actors win a prestigious Emmy Award. On September 14th, the award ceremony took place, surprising many with wins, losses, and records broken.
Before the award show, five shows made a name for themselves with their high number of nominations. The drama series The Pitt and Pluribus entered with 25 and 18 nominations, respectively. The Pitt held the most nominations before the ceremony. Both shows won six awards. This is the second year The Pitt has won Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series and Outstanding Drama Series.
Hacks and Widow’s Bay were the most nominated comedy series, with 24 and 19 nominations respectively. Widow’s Bay broke the record for most awards won in a single night by a comedy series, winning 14 awards (breaking the previous record of 11 set by The Bear in 2024). Jean Smart won Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series for her work in Hacks, tying her for the all-time record for most acting wins by a performer.
The director of Widow’s Bay, Hiro Murai, won Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, making him the first Asian director to do so. This achievement opens doors for hundreds of directors in the filmmaking industry.
Another notable moment of the night was Matthew Rhys taking home two lead actor awards. He won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (for Widow’s Bay) and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie (for The Beast in Me). This is the first time an actor has ever taken home two lead actor awards, demonstrating skill in adapting to two very different performances.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay hosted the night, becoming the first female host in fifteen years. Throughout the night, Hargitay brought out many famous guest stars, such as Jalen Brunson and Taylor Swift. Hargitay herself took home two awards for her documentary about her mother, who passed away when she was three.
The night was full of fond memories and emotions. Michael J. Fox, known for his lead role in Back To The Future and the sitcom Family Ties, was presented with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award. This award was given to him for his advocacy and research on Parkinson’s Disease. Fox was diagnosed with this illness in 1998. Fox said in his speech that he was worried that Parkinson’s would negatively affect his relationship with acting and his fans. The support he received was “uplifting,” and he realized that they “couldn’t take this away” from him.
In hard times, this award night is a time for everyone to come together and celebrate the hard work and talent of every person who works to create the shows that we love. It is important to recognize everyone from the lead actors and actresses to the casting directors and makeup artists. At the end of the award season, all we can do is wait and watch, preparing for next year.
