On April 20th 2026, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees were announced. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or Rock Hall, is a museum that features and honors the history of rock music. Those who can be inducted must have been in the industry for 25 years after their first commercial recording and have demonstrated a significant influence on the music industry. This year, 18 members were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

There are four categories in which an artist can be inducted. The Performer Category includes singers, vocal groups, bands, and instrumentalists. There were eight artists in this category.

Phil Collins was the lead singer of the rock band Genesis and had a successful solo career. His work has resulted in more US top-40 singles than any other artist in the 1980s. Some of his most recognizable songs are “In the Air Tonight” and “Another Day in Paradise.” Billy Idol acquired his second nomination this year, being known as an early MTV superstar. Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, and Oasis have each been nominated three times, with the addition of this year. Iron Maiden is a heavy metal band. Their album The Number of the Beat is one of the most popular metal albums worldwide, having sold over 20 million copies.

Joy Division/New Order were pioneers in the post-punk genre. Oasis’s “Wonderwall” is considered one of the most-streamed songs of the 1970s-90s in the UK, skyrocketing the band to fame. Sade is a band known for their artful blend of jazz, soul, and funk. They were nominated once before in 2024. Luther Vandross and Wu-Tang Clan achieved their first nominations this year. Luther Vandross was an R&B and soul singer, being named one of the best R&B artists by Billboard. Wu-Tang Clan is an American hip-hop band known for its honest and unique lyrics.

Another category in the Hall of Fame is the Early Influence Award. Artists’ awards in this category are from earlier eras, such as jazz and folk. Their work has been a major influence on future rock and roll artists. Five artists have been awarded this award.

Celia Cruz was a Cuban singer, known for popularizing Latin music in the 20th century. Fela Kuti was a Nigerian musician. Many consider him a creator of Afrobeat, a music genre that blends West African sound with American jazz. Queen Latifah and MC Lyte are both rappers and songwriters. Latifah won Best Solo Rap performance at the 37th Grammys. MC Lyte is considered a pioneer in female rap. Finally, Gram Parsons is known for founding country-rock. He was listed #87th in Billboard’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

The third category in the Hall of Fame is the Musical Excellence Award. This category was created in 2000 to honor musicians who play in recording sessions or concerts. It hoped to acknowledge musicians who would otherwise be overlooked.

Linda Creed was a vocalist, providing backing vocals on songs by the Spinners. Songs she wrote were recorded and used by Dusty Springfield as well. Arif Mardin and Jimmy Miller were music producers. Mardin worked with many well-known artists, some being Queen, Aretha Franklin, and the Bee Gees. He has 12 Grammy Awards. Rick Rubin is a record producer who has worked with rock bands such as AC/DC and pop stars such as Lady Gaga.

The final award presented is the Ahmet Ertegun Award, honoring those who work behind the scenes in music. Ed Sullivan is the only awardee this year. Sullivan was an American television host whose show, Toast of the Town, later renamed The Ed Sullivan Show, highlighted rock music.

On November 14th, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction will take place in California. Every single artist has proved why they deserve their placement among some of the greatest and most influential rock musicians.
