Hulbert B/C’s Pot Painting Palooza

SUNY Oneonta

On April 21st, Hulbert B/C’s Hall Government and the Office of Sustainability hosted their Pot Painting Palooza. At this event, students were able to paint their own pot and receive a starter pack to grow their own flowers. Each pot came with dirt and flower seeds, so each student could hopefully bloom their own flowers from their dorm room.

Hall Government President, Ashley, is an adolescent education mathematics major. Ashley came up with the idea for this event due to her love for flowers. It also perfectly coincided with Green Dragon Week, which is from April 18th to May 2nd. The theme of flowers would go perfectly with the holiday of celebrating the Earth, which falls on Wednesday, April 22nd. This time is vital in educating the campus on sustainability, environmental action, and community engagement.

The RA liaison for the Office of Sustainability brought up the idea of partnering with the office to make the event possible. They hope that students are able to successfully grow their own flowers, choosing flowers that are small in size and realistic to flourish in a dorm room. They hope students take away that it can be fun to start your own garden and watch something come to life. In Ashley’s words, “You don’t have to be a crazy gardener” to grow a flower. Every person should give it a try!

Abby Austin attended this event, hearing that there would be plants and food. As someone who loves plants and sustainability, she knew this event would be lots of fun. Abby is very dedicated to sustainability efforts. She recently went to the Oneonta Farmer’s Market. As a prospective teacher, Abby understands how important it is to take care of the environment for the future generation. Some other actions she takes involve donating clothes, and as an RA, she informs her residents to do so as well.

Hall Government’s Treasurer, Olivia Hanks, was also an attendee at this event. She believes that being a part of the Hall Government is a great and worthwhile experience. Working with people across the building, she fosters connections and builds her communication and leadership skills.

Hall Government meets once a week on Mondays and plans events. There is a large amount of freedom in what events they can hold. The government is expected to hold one event per month. The last event of the year will be the Stress Buster for finals week. They highly recommend that students join the Hall Government. It is something for anyone who wants to get involved on campus. Joining allows students to get to know others and develop an open mind.

Whether you are looking to join your Hall Government or make a positive impact on the world, events like these demonstrate how important community and connection are at SUNY Oneonta. Be sure to check your email to stay on top of events hosted in your residence hall or across campus.
