A U.S. crew member who disappeared while flying an F-15E fighter jet over a remote area of Iran was shot down, was rescued early in the morning on Sunday April 5th. The jet was recovered April 3rd.
President Donald Trump announced the rescue on social media on Sunday morning after the US military “pulled off one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations”. The officer was confirmed to be safe as well. President Donald Trump further explained in his post that the officer was also seriously wounded. “We have rescued the seriously wounded, and really brave, F-15 Crew Member/Officer, from deep inside the mountains of Iran,”
President Donald Trump also stated that the pilot was rescued in the “broad daylight”, after the United States forces “spent seven hours over Iran”.
Initially the President confirmed the rescue over social media early on Sunday morning. He revealed more following up details in a conference on Monday, April 6th.
There were two pilots aboard the jet when it was shot down. Both pilots were ejected from the aircraft.
Mikey Kay, military analyst and host of the Security Brief on BBC News, said ejection from an aircraft is “a brutal process” that “can produce massive forces on the body”.
One of the officers was rescued almost immediately after the incident before the second one following on April 5th.
Iranian officials stated that the jet had been shot down by an air defense system.
When the jet was initially shot down, Iran and the United States were at a race to find the people aboard it. The exact steps taken to find the officer are not public, yet individuals somewhat close to the operation disclosed that this operation was somewhat like a “huge combat search” for the officer who was stranded in southern Iran.
The officer scaled cliffs while wounded, and hid along the mountains while awaiting rescue. The CIA was a huge help in being able to locate the officer. This operation was described as being similar to a “needle in a haystack” search.
“This type of raid is seldom attempted because of the danger to ‘man and equipment.’ It just doesn’t happen!” the president said on social media. These types of searches are a race against time. The mission involved deception campaigns to distract Iran.
Following the officers rescue, President Donald Trump released a statement online confirming the officers rescue.
