“Short n’ Sweet” by Sabrina Carpenter’s most recent album, came out August 23rd, 2024. To give a short backstory of this article, “Short n’ Sweet” is rumored to be about pop singer and ex-boyfriend Shawn Mendes. Sabrina Carpenter has not come and flat out said that it is about him, a lot of the songs certainly hint about their ex-romance.

Shawn Mendes and Sabrina Carpenter were allegedly on a date and first spotted in February 2023, shortly after that they were photographed together walking around in Los Angeles. One month later, a video was taken of the two of them walking out of Miley Cyrus’ album release party. This blew up the internet and rumors circulated further that they were together. This album hints at their relationship and Mendes’ ex-girlfriend, Camila Cabello was the ‘other woman’ in this scenario.

Of course, this is all speculation. A dissection of the lyrics on Carpenter’s album shows a possible connection. However, let us get into the dissection of these lyrics from “Short n’ Sweet.”

First let us talk about the first track: “Taste.” “Taste” is about an ex-fling of Sabrina Carpenter’s going back to his ex-girlfriend. A lyric that stands out is, “Heard you’re back together and if that’s true, you’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissing you.”

It was rumored by multiple entertainment news outlets that in April of 2023, Cabello and Mendes got back together. Precisely two months after rumors of their relationship arose.

Another interesting factor to take into consideration in ‘Taste’ is the part where Carpenter sings, “Makes paintings with his tongue la la la la la.” which has heavy similarity in tone and rhythm to a song featured in a meme about Mendes. This shows that Sabrina Carpenter may be mocking Shawn Mendes in her song.

Another factor of ‘Taste’ is that in the music video itself, the two main actors who are playing the ex-girlfriend, and the ex-boyfriend both resemble Cabello and Mendes.

Next, take a look at track number four: “Sharpest Tool.” Specifically, the line “We never talk about how you found God at your ex’s house, always made sure that the phone was face-down.” In this line she refers to the ‘ex’ as she usually does in most of the songs in this album. This leads one to believe that the ex she is referring to is Cabello; as she referred to her in the first song of the album ‘Taste.’

Finally, the last song to be discussed is track number 5: “Coincidence.” The song is about an ex-fling of Carpenter’s who has left her for his ex-girlfriend. The lyrics to be focusing on is, ‘Last week, you didn’t have any doubts This week, you’re holdin’ space for her tongue in your mouth Now shе’s sendin’ you some pictures wеarin’ less and less Tryna turn the past into the present tense, huh.’

Carpenter is reiterating that the ‘ex’ she is speaking about is Mendes because there are no other reported exes of Carpenter’s that went back to another ex-girlfriend of theirs except for Mendes.

Overall, this may just be rumors. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think this album is about Shawn Mendes?
