Last week The Grammys took place and with it brought several highlights and controversies as any good award show does. Some may not have been able to watch the Grammys due to a lack of TV, streaming service, or other conflicts. Consider this a recap of The Grammys in case you missed it.
On the red carpet, Kanye West showed up with his wife Biance Censori and showed off their Grammys outfits for the world to see. Censori’s outfit was a sheer minidress underneath a black fur coat. She took the coat off to reveal a dress that was so sheer, her chest and other private areas of her body were exposed. This sparked a debate on whether or not her outfit could be labeled as public indecency. Many know that this is not the first time Censori and West have made headlines for inappropriate actions. Next to her West was covered by a t-shirt, pants, and black shoes. According to The New York Times, when the LAPD was contacted, they explained that the California Penal Code lists public indecency as “the willful exposure of one’s genitals in a public place or in the presence of another person.”
Beyonce took home the Album of the Year award for her album “Cowboy Carter,” beating out fellow nominees: Taylor Swift for The Tortured Poets Department, Billie Eilish for HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, Sabrina Carpenter for Short N’ Sweet, Andre 3000 for New Blue Sun, Jacob Collier for Dejesse Vol.4, Charlie XCX for Brat, and Chappell Roan for The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. According to ABC News Beyonce thanked Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters in her speech after they presented the award to her.
Kendrick Lamar also went home with a few Grammys for his song “Not Like Us.” The song took home the awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Lamar dedicated his win for Record of the Year to Los Angeles according to ABC News and he had this to say:
“‘This is my neck of the woods that’s held me down since [I was] a young pup,’he said. ‘I can’t give enough thanks to these places that I rolled around since high school, most importantly, the people and the families out in the Palisades and Altadena.’”
Shakira even performed on stage making it her first performance at the Grammys since 2007. ABC News mentions that Shakira had taken home the award for Best Latin Pop Album earlier in the night.
Many have also wondered why The Grammys took place despite the five wildfires in Los Angeles. The CEO of the Recording Academy and MusiCares, Harvey Mason Jr alongside Tammy Hurt who is the chair of the Recording Academy board of trustees, stated that The Grammys would go on as scheduled, but it will benefit firefighters and those affected by the wildfires. The article published by Variety pulled a quote from the statement which reads “This year’s show, however, will carry a renewed sense of purpose: raising additional funds to support wildfire relief efforts and honoring the bravery and dedication of first responders who risk their lives to protect ours,” The statement also mentions that the Recording Academy and MusiCares have started the Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort with a 1 million dollar donation.
