This past week many of us here at SUNY Oneonta were able to vote for the very first time in the 2024 Presidential Election. November 5th, 2024 marked a milestone day for many of us and the results came in the next day early in the morning. Donald Trump was elected to be the 47th President of the United States of America. Some hope he delivers on the multitudes of promises he made on the campaign trail and some hope for the opposite. As of right now, the US is divided on how the people feel about who won the race. Several celebrities have come forward in the days following the election and shared their opinions and how they feel about the results.

The kicker? Most of these celebrities who spoke out were against Trump. According to The Independent singer Billie Eilish called Trump’s win a war on women and Lilli Reinhart one of the stars of Riverdale expressed sympathy for the women who came forward about the sexual assault they went through from Trump and how they must feel seeing millions of people vote for their abuser. “I cannot fathom the feeling of the women who came forward about their sexual assault at the hands of Trump. Seeing millions of people vote for their abuser. My heart breaks for these women. I believe you, and I am so sorry.”

On the other side Joe Rogan an influential podcaster according to The Independent tweeted on X right when Trump claimed victory, “WHOLE LEE S***” while other celebrities such as Zachary Levi have long been open about their support of Trump. Despite the promises made to get him back to The White House, there is no telling how the next four years will end up going.

Predictably Donald Trump’s opponent Kamala Harris claimed descent portions of both the East and West Coast and their electoral college votes. She managed to claim California’s 54 votes which may have helped offset the 40 votes Trump picked up from Texas but it was not enough to push her over the finish line. Trump managed to snag most of the swing states and their votes including Pennsylvania. Predictably he claimed Florida and Texas and their combined total of 70 votes towards the 270 total needed to win. As for New York, it predictably turned blue as did much of the East Coast including New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Jersey to name a few. Trump swept much of the South including both Carolinas and Georgia, another swing state.

However, Harris snatched up Virginia and New Mexico adding to her total. Currently, Harris has 226 votes while Trump has 301 votes handing him the Presidency. The last state that has yet to yield definitive results is Arizona and its 11 votes. Nebraska is divided into five districts and Trump swept all but District 2 which went to Harris. Trump managed to secure the majority of the country and its votes to win. All this according to AP News is typically the source Americans turn to so they can know who is the next resident in the Oval Office. 10 states had Abortion Protection Amendments on the ballot this election and 7 states managed to pass them. According to The New York Times, those seven states are Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, New York, and Nevada. The state of Missouri is the first state to undo a full ban. Throughout the election, there were wins and losses.
