Having Fun in Fall: Oneonta Style

Averi Amsterdam, Staff WriterFly-Creek

Now that it is officially fall, let’s hope Mother Nature is kind enough to keep the nice autumn weather trend going. The occasional summer-like days are fun, after all, who wants summer to be completely gone? However, hopefully they will be kept to a minimum so that these fun Oneonta adventures can be crossed off your fall bucket list.

1. Hike to Table Rock

Located on Hartwick’s campus, this relatively short trail provides a beautiful view overlooking the town of Oneonta once you’re at the top. It’s perfect for a weekend hike that doesn’t require traveling too far. The trail isn’t too difficult, so you can carry a picnic lunch with you to eat at the top as you enjoy the scenery.

2. Strawberry Fields

If you’ve already done the Table Rock hike and are looking for something different, try Strawberry Fields! The entrance to this trail is right across from where you would start the hike for Table Rock, but provides a different view along the way.

3. Picnic in Wilber Park

Filled with grassy areas great for picnics, Wilber Park is located in downtown Oneonta by East and Center street. With easy walking access from the bus stop, there is no better place to enjoy the fall weather while hanging with some friends on the weekend. There are even hiking trails located throughout the park to get your steps in for the day!

4. College Camp

Just a short drive from campus, College Camp consists of a large area of open land complete with hiking trails, a beautiful lake, and even a lodge available to students for night rentals.

5. Fly Creek Cider Mill and Orchard

About a half-hour drive from SUNY Oneonta, Fly Creek Cider Mill and Orchard is complete with beautiful views, a marketplace with cider tastings, and a restaurant/bakery with delicious baked goods made right on site.

6. Ghost Tours

Interested in ghost stories and spooky history? Head to Cooperstown for a ghost tour lasting a little over an hour, touring through haunted houses in the town. This is not the best idea for a last minute adventure because reservations are required, but with Halloween right around the corner, this is the perfect fall activity to plan in advance.

7. Middlefield Orchard

Ever walk through the quad in between classes on Tuesday and see the small farmer’s market selling fresh produce? Well you can go apple and pumpkin picking with your family or friends at our Oneonta farmer’s market vendor’s orchard. Complete with a corn maze and all, this orchard is an easy half-hour drive from campus, with scenery for that perfect Instagram-worthy picture.

With all of these possibilities, make sure to take some breaks throughout the semester to go on some fun adventures around Oneonta while enjoying the cool fall weather.
