Every semester, the Student Association releases scholarships for the student body. This semester we had seven scholarships available for any activity fee-paying student to apply for, plus one scholarship offered by Student Fashion Society. The seven scholarships were worth $300 each and will be applied to the student’s tuition bill for Fall 2014. The scholarship offered by the Student Fashion Society is worth $600 and will be applied to the student’s tuition bill in the following manner: $300 towards Fall 2013 and $300 towards Spring 2014. The Student Association is pleased to announce the recipients of the SA and Student Fashion Society scholarships:
Jeffery Gaudet was a math and psychology major and he entered SUNY Oneonta in Fall of 1976. He passed away in December of 1977. The Jeffery Gaudet Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student with athletic involvement in either intramural or intercollegiate sports. Congratulations to Sumire Niki for being awarded the Jeffery Gaudet Memorial Scholarship.
Sarah Callahan was a food service major at the College of Oneonta. She was an active member of the Food and Nutrition Association and dedicated many volunteer hours to the community. At home, Sarah was a volunteer firefighter and was a varsity field hockey goalie in high school. She was killed in an automobile accident in November of 2005. The Sarah Callahan Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who has performed a community service that benefited the campus or the Oneonta community. Congratulations to Rachel Barnett for being awarded this scholarship.
A World of Difference Institute is a comprehensive international anti-bias education and diversity program that addresses all forms of prejudice and discrimination and promotes the value of diversity. The World of Difference scholarship is awarded to a student involved in campus-wide goals of decreasing prejudice among the college community and demonstrates activities directed towards meeting the goals of A World of Difference. We are proud to announce Jessica Morrone as the recipient of this scholarship.
Linda Velzy was a freshman at SUNY Oneonta and lived in Golding Hall. In December of 1977, while hitchhiking on the corner of West Street and Chestnut Street, she was picked up by an individual who raped and killed her. This story appeared on the television program 60 Minutes. Because of Linda’s tragic death, Oneonta students now have the OPT busses. The Linda Velzy Memorial and Community Service Scholarship is awarded to a student who performs community service, which benefits campus or the Oneonta community and is voluntary. We are pleased to announce Layla Mallinan as the recipient of this scholarship.
Sepp Rhoese was the director of College Camp from 1978 through 1980. He was married and had one child. He started here at SUNY Oneonta as an exchange student. He was killed in an automobile accident in February of 1980 and the fitness trail was named in his memory. The Sepp Rhoese Memorial scholarship is awarded to a student who is participating in a study abroad program. We are glad to award this scholarship to Kelsey Jerauld.
Rodney Fitch was a political science major who graduated in 1987. While at SUNY Oneonta, he served as an RA, was a member of APO, and served as an active leader in the Student Association Senate.
