Letter to the Editor: Speech and Debate Club

Coach Anne Burgin, Contributing Writer

SUNY Oneonta’s Speech and Debate Team is excited to announce a debate demonstration on Friday, September 7, at 11 a.m. Experienced student teams from Cornell and Binghamton Universities will face off in our own Goodrich Theater, in the Fine Arts building. This is an excellent opportunity for all studetns to learn about an exciting and challenging way to hone public speaking skills while also representing their school.

Whether someone has a passion for debate or simply thinks it sounds intriguing, this event is a great way to learn more. The World’s-style Parliamentary debate with Binghamton and Cornell students will begin at 11:00 and last for about an hour and a half. (Depending on the availability of Binghamton’s students, there may also be a Policy-style debate after this). Anyone who is interested is encouraged to come for the entire session, but if you have class during part of it, feel free to stop by for a few minutes. After the debate, audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions about the format and the topics brought up. If possible, we will also have the audience decide the ranking of the teams.

The Speech and Debate Team was founded last fall, and went on to represent SUNY Oneonta at several tournaments across New York State. This year, we plan to compete in about five intercollegiate tournaments, including those at Binghamton, Cornell and Ithaca College. New members are always welcome at our meetings (currently Thursdays at 5:30 in IRC 9) to learn about what we do and possibly practice for a competition.
