10 Things to Do on a Friday Night— That Don’t Involve Drinking

Tara Miner, Staff Writer

So it’s a Friday night and you don’t want to get hammered with friends, but you don’t know what else to do. Well, here are some good suggestions (in no particular order) of what to do with your evening!

1. Do laundry
Seriously! What other day of the week are you going to be able to not have to worry about getting a washer or dryer without excess hassle? Friday and Saturday nights are the best nights to do laundry. Throw all those dirty shirts in the washer and forget about them.

2. Read a book
When was the last time you picked up a book and read for leisure? For some people, reading isn’t their thing, but even if you don’t usually read, it might be beneficial to find a book with a topic that you’re interested in and just curl up in your room.

3. Watch a movie
The Red Dragon Theater shows movies every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. There’s bound to be a movie that you like some week – and it’s free! And if you don’t like the movie on-campus, you could always go to Southside and catch a film there. Or have a TV show marathon! Catch up on all those old episodes that you’ve missed due to homework and clubs. Invite a friend or two, pop some popcorn and you’re set for the evening.

4. Play video games
The Dragon’s Lair is open until 1 a.m. on Fridays and until midnight on Saturdays. They have plenty of different games, even for people who don’t usually play video games. Again, invite a friend, or even just hang out in your room if you happen to have a game console.

5. Have a board game night
Break out Apples to Apples, Scrabble or Risk, and have your friends over. Bring snacks, and you’re sure to have a night to remember!

6. Do homework
I know this sounds like the last thing you’d want to do on a Friday night, but it’s actually quite wise – if you do even a little bit of your homework on Friday night, you’ll have more free time to spend on Saturday night and even Sunday.

7. Organize your room
Also sounds like another boring one, but when else will you have the time to organize? Monday morning you’ll be really glad you did take the time to put everything away and sweep and dust.

8. Do a late night Wal-Mart run
Shopping can be a really fun thing to do, and it’s even more fun to do at night! Feel free to act completely crazy and run through the aisles – no one’s watching you!

9. Makeover night
Have fun with this! Go all out on hair and makeup, then post the (sober) photos on Facebook the next day if you feel like it.

10. Go out to dinner
Even if it’s just down to Sal’s, another pizza place or a Chinese joint, it’s always nice to get off campus and get some food that might be different from Mills or Wilsbach. It’s also a good time to catch up with friends and chat about life.

This is just a short list of things that you can do on a Friday or Saturday night that don’t involve embarrassing pictures on Facebook the next morning, or a night that you can’t remember. Have a safe and fun weekend!
