WONY X Sigma Gamma Phi International Music Night

Erica Siaulnski, Staff Writer

SUNY Oneonta’s student led radio station, also known as WONY or 90.9 FM hosted an international movie night, this past Wednesday and invited the members of Sigma Gamma Phi, an on campus sorority to join them in listening to the music from all across the globe and took a deeper look at the cultures, and backstories from which the music came from. Featuring songs such as Suzanna by Sauti Sol, a band formed in Kenya. Along with Lemonade by Aespa, the South Korean girl group.

WONY’s website explains everything you need to know, from what they’re currently playing, the history of the club to how it got started here at SUNY Oneonta. On their website you can also find their schedule for each week and their social media links,  as well as what events they’re hosting this week to how to get involved, how to join their club, even merch is available on their website for purchase. And there’s even an option to possibly request to book a DJ through them for any event you may need one for.

Their ‘About WONY’ section of their page reads “WONY 90.9FM is SUNY Oneonta’s on-campus radio station. Established in 1962 and located in the basement of Hunt Union, we play a variety of music and have over two dozen live DJ’s per week that bring you the tunes and talk you love. Student operated and SA-funded, we are open to all SUNY Oneonta students and faculty.”

Jennifer Turcios Cisneros, a junior year student here at SUNY Oneonta as well as the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion chair of Sigma Gamma Phi, was more than thrilled to join WONY with this event. When asked what it was like to plan and host an exciting event such as this, with another club on campus, this is what she had to say. “It was so amazing to work with another club on campus. This school’s focus on community has been falling recently and I partnered with WONY to make sure that students are able to expand beyond their one organization. It’s so important for students of different backgrounds to come together and communicate what helps with connection.”

If interested in events such as this one, students are able to find more events like this one, and are welcome to join and participate by checking WONY’s website for updates, or searching on campus connections to find more.
