The New York Jets have had a disappointing season thus far, with a current record of 2-9. They are sitting at the bottom of the AFC East and have begun shifting their focus towards the future of the team.
The Jets entered the 2025 season with low expectations, considering they haven’t made the playoffs since the 2010 season. However, with management moves, like bringing in new head coach Aaron Glenn, there was some hope for the team. This hope has since been lost as the team still does not know how to work together, with issues both on the offensive and defensive sides.
Additionally, star players for the Jets have experienced injuries, pulling them out for several weeks. This has caused the morale and playing ability of the team to drastically decrease. This includes wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who is currently out with a knee injury.
November 4th was the NFL trade deadline, and the Jets took advantage with unexpected trades. General manager Darren Mougey set these plans into motion to gain a stack of first and second round picks for the future.
The first crazy trade was when Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner was announced to be joining the Indianapolis Colts. Gardner is a cornerback and was a standout player for the Jets, getting the 2023 Defensive Rookie of the Year award. In exchange for Gardner, the Jets received Colts wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, a 2026 first-round pick, and a 2027 first-round pick.
The next trade was defensive tackle Quinnen Williams. He was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for defensive lineman Mazi Smith. Additionally, the Jets received a 2026 second-round pick and a 2027 first-round pick in this trade.
The final trade for the Jets on the day of the deadline was giving a 2028 seventh-round pick to the Los Angeles Chargers in exchange for cornerback Ja’Sir Taylor.
The Jets ended the trade deadline stacked with several first and second round picks. In total, the Jets have two first-round picks and two second-round picks for the 2026 season. For 2027, they have three first-round picks and one second-round pick. This could represent a team and management finally putting in the effort to create change.
The biggest scare during the trade deadline was the possibility of losing Breece Hall. During the chaos, he was posting cryptic messages online as rumors swirled. One post said, “They want me to lay down but I got sum to stand for … #Free20.”
Another post, that has since been deleted, discussed disappointment over Gardner and Williams leaving, as well as stating that he felt sick regarding the trades.
Rumors continued to swirl, with social media accounts and leaks stating that Hall was begging for a trade. However, Hall ended up remaining on the team. He was then asked about the rumors by NFL reporter Connor Hughes on November 5, “Breece Hall said he never requested a trade from the Jets but didn’t say yes or no on whether he wanted one.”
