This past week, a woman in Kentucky was waiting for her medicine and medical supplies to arrive in the mail. Eventually, a package gets delivered, but when she opened it, she saw that the contents of the box were not what she was expecting to be delivered. Inside the box was a human hand and fingers that were supposed to be used for surgical training, but they got misdelivered to the Kentucky woman. According to NBC News, Christian County Coroner, Scott Daniel, lent a helping hand in getting the hands and fingers where they belong. The body parts seemed to have come from four different bodies before being shipped off for science.
The mix-up might have happened at the airport, says Daniel. Daniel gave a statement to People Magazine saying “It was just an error, I think her box and that box [of body parts] had come into the Nashville airport…The courier that was supposed to have picked up the body parts picked up her meds. And then the second courier that was supposed to get the body parts picked up [the women’s box]. It was just a reversed delivery.” After the ordeal, Daniel called the unnamed woman to check up on her and make sure she was okay and that she received the package she had been originally waiting for.
Daniel also told People Magazine that the woman thought the contents of the box were misdelivered Halloween decorations as this happened two days before Halloween. Daniel did not ask about where the body parts came from, but he thinks they might have been from cadavers that had been donated for scientific purposes. The parts were not supposed to leave Nashville, but they did and ended up in Kentucky on someone’s front porch.
NBC reports that Daniel said, “We were able to reach the courier, who retrieved the package the following morning. I left the scene with the box and stored it in our morgue until he arrived. The resident of the home was able to get her meds and medical supplies the following day as well.” Daniel said that if faced with a situation like this one, everyone should do what the woman did. She called 911 and reported the body parts to the authorities. He said there is no need to do anything drastic like refrigerating the parts.
In the end, the body parts were sent to their original destination, and the woman got the time-sensitive medication and supplies she was originally supposed to receive in the first place. The body parts were a surprise but eventually the medications and the hands got where they were supposed to go.
