The bestselling book Regretting You by Colleen Hoover made its way to the big screens on October 24th, and the reviews are more than mixed.

Regretting You was originally published in December of 2019 and recently adapted in 2025 to be a movie. The story follows Clara and her mother, Morgan, who are nothing alike. Like most teenage daughters and their mothers, they often argue and fail to see eye-to-eye. Then after a tragic accident involving Clara’s father, Morgan reveals an awful secret about her husband; the two struggle to go on after realizing how much has changed in their lives.

McKenna Grace starred as Clara. Allison Williams plays her mother, Morgan. Mason Thames played Miller Adams and Dave Franco played Jonah Sullivan. After the release to theaters on October 24th, reviews were quick to circulate. While some were positive, saying that the movie was a great, interesting watch; others claimed that the movie was “boring” or “disappointing.” There were comments stating that the story lacks a lot of a plot in general. One reviewer on IMDb wrote “is this a movie for teen girls? It tried to be touching but was almost silly to me.” Other reviews pointed out the plot holes they discovered in the storyline. Another reviewer on reddit posted “Only saw this because of season pass. Saw Black Phone 2 yesterday which Mason Thames was great in again, kind of shocked that he was simultaneously in this garbage”

This wouldn’t be the first time a Colleen Hoover movie received mixed reviews. In 2021, one of her books, It Ends With Us, became extremely popular. Originally published in 2016, the book follows a young adult woman who experiences a physically abusive relationship. The book was adapted into a movie in 2024 and was met with reviews similar to the ones left about Regretting You. Starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, the film was in theaters for a while before cycling out. People described It Ends With Us as very disappointing, romanticizing abusive relationships and boring. Others pointed out how dull and how it lacks emotional intensity for a film about domestic violence; which left many fans disappointed and upset over. A similar statement was mentioned about Regretting You as well. Another reviewer wrote “I wouldn’t call it bad, but definitely not good.”

It appears that the film was met with disappointment, but some say it was “silly and lighthearted,” or “just the kind of movie you’d want to watch this time of year.”
