In an effort to try new food and restaurants, my friends and I decided to go to Shooters Bar and Grill. Now I know what you’re thinking “Why would you go to a place that’s mainly for drunk college kids?” Honestly, I don’t know why I did either. Located off Main Street in Oneonta, Shooters isn’t one of the more popular bars in Oneonta. Shooters is one of the cheaper and more cost-efficient bars in town with cheap drinks and surprisingly cheap food.
I always knew Shooters served food, but I was a little scared to try it with my friends. We walked in and sat at the bar around 6 p.m. and were greeted by an almost empty bar with two other people in it. I think we killed their vibe because as soon as we sat down at the bar, they immediately moved. Off to a great start already! The bartender checked our IDs and asked us what we wanted to drink. We began to browse the food menu. The menu consisted of simple bar foods like boneless chicken wings, mac and cheese, and french fries. However, the one thing that stood out to me was poutine, the Canadian delicacy of french fries with gravy and cheese curds on top. I knew I had to order that because how could you not order that delicious combo? My friends ordered boneless wings and beer cheese fries. We all had high hopes that this was going to be the new hidden gem of Oneonta and we all thought we were going to start a new trend of going to Shooters for food. We were very wrong.
After putting in our orders, we walked around and put a dollar into the jukebox. After a few songs, we sat back down and waited for our food. It had been a while since we ordered, and we could all hear our stomachs growling. While waiting, the fire alarm started to go off. We’re obviously a little concerned and thought they messed up a food order, but we shrugged it off and remained optimistic.
The first entree that came out was my poutine fries. I immediately dug in, and it was one of the best first bites I’ve had. I looked forward to the rest of my meal. It was then eating the rest of it that made me realize that this did not taste good at all. The fries were really soggy and the gravy didn’t taste like gravy. The only good thing about the dish was the cheese curds because they are always delicious. As I sat there in disappointment and was thinking about food from elsewhere, my friend’s food came out. They were greeted with boneless wings that appeared to be more little chicken bites and ends instead of wings. I snagged a piece of the chicken and it tasted terrible. My friend said, “This literally tastes like play dough,” and I had to agree with them. My other friend’s beer cheese fries were like my meal where the first bite is good, but then it just declined after every bite. As we finished our meals with disappointment and slightly upset stomachs, we all collectively agreed to never go back there to dine.
Overall, Shooters has cheap drinks, and a good atmosphere, but don’t even attempt to order the food. I would rank my experience at Shooters as a 5 out of 10.
