Despite the closures and the lack of in-person musical performances, the Music Industry Club (MIC) will continue to hold virtual events this semester.
In the past, MIC has had weekly meetings on Sundays at 5:00 p.m. and has produced many on-campus concerts for students to attend. Usually, there is a fee of one to five dollars for entry depending on if you buy your tickets in advance. They also have hosted events, open mic-nights and had recently begun holding their own music industry conference. This semester has proved extra challenging.
The President of MIC, Geoffrey Rosenthal, stated they “still want students to have ways to share what they’re working on.” While MIC isn’t holding their usual online concerts this semester, they do plan on having another student-run, streamed performance sometime in the future.
Earlier this semester, MIC held their annual “Back to School” Fest virtually. The event featured pre-recorded videos of local Oneonta musicians and was live-streamed to YouTube. Rosenthal noted that the “Back to School” Fest has become a tradition that gives local artists the opportunity to share their projects. The link to the stream can be found on their Instagram page, @oneonta_mic.
MIC has also been holding virtual panels, where students and professionals in the music industry can have real conversations. Geoffrey notes that one benefit to online events is that they can get more people to come and speak that would not have otherwise. Using the school’s alumni network, they currently have plans for future panels that will allow students to learn about what it is like to work in the industry during COVID-19.
If you’re interested in attending other musical performances, the Student Association (SA) is hosting performances by Rico Nasty on Oct. 14 at 9:00 p.m. and The Aces on Oct. 21 at 9:00 p.m. These shows are on “Red Dragon Wednesdays” and the event pages on Campus Connection provide instructions for how to attend the Oneonta “tour” date. Students will have to create an account on LoopedLive.com using their Oneonta email. Once you register, you will be able to follow the link provided to watch each of their shows on your computer, laptop or your smartphone via the Looped app.
Though these events are listed under the Music Industry Club, the group is not directly working with the event. The show with Rico Nasty is also listed with the Songwriter’s Club while The Aces’ show is listed with the Gender Equality and Rights Society, the Women’s & Gender Studies department and the Songwriter’s Club. All of these events are also hosted and funded by the Activities Council.
Since there are many obstacles to holding weekly meetings, the club has decided to hold about two to three meetings every month. The meetings have become more dependent on having something specific to talk about. Their next meeting is on Oct. 11. On their Instagram, they encourage students to come and chat about music: “A good ol’ freeform MIC meeting. Come chat about recent releases, favorite artists, or your newest project!” For the link to attend the club meeting zoom, students can email [email protected].
