Need a new space to study in quiet or maybe somewhere to relax in between classes? Then it’s time for you to check out the Lounge, located in Union Square in the basement of Hunt Union. Started in the fall of 2018, the Lounge was created out of a need for a space where students could hang out in between classes. As the slogan states, the Lounge is an opportunity for students to relax and recharge throughout their busy class days. Snacks are available in addition to basic study tools like pens, post-it notes, highlighters and more. I had the pleasure of interviewing Kate McMichael, the Assistant Director of New Student Services, who is responsible for the creation of this much needed “rest stop.” McMichael informed me that the Lounge was designed to be the “new favorite spot” for students looking for a different location to study, other than the library. Normally, the Lounge is located at the Hunt Union Dragon’s Lair, however, due to the current renovations, the Lounge has been temporarily moved to Union Square in the basement. McMichael assured me that come next semester, the Lounge will be transferred back into the Dragon’s Lair with a new and improved catchphrase, “Lounge by day, Lair by night!”
The Lounge is meant to be an inclusive, safe-space for all students to come and learn more about campus resources in addition to studying. While McMichael often stays at the Lounge, two student mentors are always there to answer any questions a student may have about anything campus-related. With a solid mix of both upper and lower classmen, the Lounge is welcoming toward all.
Events take place every other week in the Lounge in order to keep students informed about on-campus life/resources. Thursday, Feb. 20 from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m., there will be “Walk-In Trivia” in which there will be a Starbucks gift card prize! Other events include informational sessions in which representatives from various offices on campus, such as The Student Learning Center and Career Building Office, come in and speak to the students. There is always something going on at the Lounge; you could stop by Monday through Friday from 12:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. to relax, recharge and repeat!
