DatePlay V. Tinder

Tinder, OKCupid, Match, eHarmony, Christian Mingle; the list of dating sites and apps goes on and on. Meeting someone on Tinder is just as common as meeting them at a bar. As dating sites and apps become increasingly popular, so does their variety and creativity.

Apprentice UK runner up, Vana Koutsomitis, has recently come up with a completely new way of meeting the potential “one.” As Yahoo! states in a recent article concerning her new app, “DatePlay combines online dating with gaming to come up with matches for its members.” It goes on to say that, “According to Koutsomitis, the more games people play, the more compatible their matches will be.”

Currently people can sign up on DatePlay’s website but there will be an app launching relatively soon, along with a possible monthly charge. In a video Koutsomitis did for BBC.com, she talks about how the games will be comparable to BuzzFeed quizzes, where with every click the app takes in more information and ultimately matches you with people that share the same interests.

As more and more people become aware of this new app, many are questioning if it will surpass its obvious rival, Tinder. Tinder is a dating app where you give your current location along with your gender and age preference. The app then shows every possible person in your area that fits your criteria. You can look at people’s bios, mutual interests and Facebook friends, and profile pictures. After looking over the profile, you can either swipe right or left depending on if you are interested in the person or not. If the person you swiped right on also swipes right on you, it’s a match. After you match, you have the option to message them on the app.

As the arrival of DatePlay gets closer, we can only compare the two potential rivals. A pro to DatePlay are that it’s more than just swiping, which is the main focus of Tinder.

Some cons of DatePlay are that there will probably be a price to pay after an expected free trial period. The app also doesn’t allow you to view your possible matches until they are picked for you.

Some pros of Tinder are that it is free unless you want special features, and your matches are local to you. A con is that Tinder matches depend on the area you’re in.
