SAAC Makes Strides in Campus Entertainment

Kainat Malik, SA Director of Communications

This week, the SAAC Executive Board went to NACA, the National Association for Campus Activities, in Lancaster, PA. The conference is held annually and allows the programing boards of different universities to critique and bring in acts to be showcased at the conference.

The SAAC Executive Board left Thursday morning, October 18, to make it to the event. We watched a series of acts that showcased and bargained with agents to find the best prices for the best acts. The board then collectively decided on which acts to bring in.

This year, your SAAC Executive Board was very successful in booking artists. Almost all of our dates were filled with amazing acts including Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, who gave a lecture on the history of hip hop, and Svet, a violinist who has performed live with famous artists like Rihanna, T-pain and Gym Class Heroes. We also booked a wide range of acts ranging from comedians, the performing arts, special events and lectures. We will show videos of some of the booked acts at our general body meeting this Friday. Head on over to the SAAC general body meeting this Friday at 4 p.m. in the Union Square to check out all of the acts that were booked.

Along with booking acts, the SAAC Executive Board also won much deserved recognition as a delegation. The SUNY Oneonta Delegation volunteered at the conference and represented SUNY Oneonta in the best way possible. The SAAC Executive Board was recognized as the “Best Delegation” at NACA and won multiple awards for the graphic arts competition with a staff-designed poster and another student-designed poster. We also won the best multicultural event for bringing in Dr. Cornel West this fall.

The conference offered education seminars that educated the executive board on improving the Activities Council and improving relationship with different departments in our college. The executive board learned plenty and we are ready to bring about some positive changes on this campus!

Keep in mind that we are bringing in Gym Class Heroes for our second fall concert this weekend! This will be their only concert performed this fall, your only chance to see them live anywhere. The concert will be held this Saturday, October 27 in the Dewar Arena so be sure to buy your tickets now before they are gone. Tickets are on sale at Hunt Union for only $25 with student ID or $30 without. Buy yours today!

Also, with all of the hype going on about Gym Class Heroes please don’t forget to vote. If you have not received your absentee ballot, you can pick one up at the SA office. The ballots must be sent out by October 30. If you have any questions about the ballots or the voting process in general please visit, John Myron, our director of external affairs at the SA office or email him at johnr. [email protected].
