Among the many things that college students do on a regular basis, one of the most common is procrastination. We’re all guilty of it. And while I’m not encouraging anyone to leave a 10 page paper until the night before it’s due, if you’re ever looking for something to do (once all your homework is done, of course), you might want to check out a blog. Blogging is becoming increasingly popular, especially with the use of the internet. While Facebook gives us the opportunity to tell our friends and family what’s going on in our lives, blogs give us the chance to showcase our talents and interests. Including everything from fashion, food, politics, societal issues and creative endeavors, here are the top 10 blogs that you’re going to want to check out:
10. I Am Begging My Mother Not To Read This Blog (and other tales from a twenty something disaster):
Written by a woman named Katherine in her twenties who lives in Philadelphia, this blog details the daily ups and downs of her life. Her posts are hilarious, due to her keen sense of humor and blatant swearing. She recently wrote a post for her blog called, “I’m A Millennial. Please Stop Being A Douche to Me” as a response to the blog post, “Why Generation Y Yuppies Are Unhappy” from The Huffington Post: College. Both posts have gained quite a bit of attention on Facebook and Twitter, and after reading them myself, I can say both The Huffington Post and Katherine make equally valid arguments.
Started by a guy named Nick Denton, the word Gawker means, “one who stares stupidly”, according to their website. A blog that reports on culture, news stories and media issues, Gawker claims, “Today’s gossip is tomorrow’s news.”
With everything beauty related, almost any girl is going to love this blog. Byrdie is all about hair, makeup, nails and skin products, along with makeup tutorials and tips. They’ve interviewed actresses- like Amy Adams, Allison Williams, Scarlett Johansson and Drew Barrymore to see what makeup and skin products they’re using. Byrdie also gives you a guide to fashion week, showcasing what models are wearing, as well as everyday fashion advice.
7. Perez Hilton:
Referred to in the bio of his own website as, “the internet’s most notorious gossip columnist,” that’s Perez Hilton in a nutshell. His blog features pictures, gossip posts and videos of any and every celebrity in Hollywood. Most trending on the blog’s main page right now are Britteny Spears, Zac Efron, Miley Cyrus and Lea Michele. The website is split into sections called Perez Hilton, Perezitos, Coco Perez, Fit Perez and Teddy Hilton.
Founded by Zooey Deschanel, Molly McAleer and Sophia Rossi, HelloGiggles is a blog and online community that covers many topics, including pop culture, arts and craft projects, fashion, sex and relationships, recipes, entertainment, pets, “cuteness” and beauty. This blog was created with women in mind, to give them inspiration for stylish living, and is meant to spread positivity and encouraging messages to its readers.
5. The Onion: America’s Finest News Source:
Okay, so you may want to take the second part of the title with a grain of salt, because The Onion is really a news parody and satire organization. Covering topics such as politics, sports, business and fantasy football, The Onion is sure to make you laugh when all the news on TV and in the newspapers is making you think that the world is coming to an end. But then again, with articles like, “Washington’s Hobby Lobby Lobbies to Strengthen Hobbies,” “Hell Now A Thriving Epicenter of Gay Culture,” “Study: Americans Enjoy Watching TV, Eating” and “SI Investigation Reveals Oklahoma State An Awesome Place To Play Football”, maybe they are the finest news source out there after all.
A highly respected news source, CNN provides up-to-date, accurate accounts of issues in society. With a dedicated staff working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, CNN is able to cover topics in U.S. and global news, entertainment, justice, politics, travel, health, sports and living. With live-streaming videos, this is the perfect website to visit for consistently authentic, updated information.
What is quite possibly one of the most popular blogs out there, BuzzFeed includes everything: news, music, books, celebrity updates, sports, food, animals and DIY projects. It gives you a little bit of everything, while still providing the humor of The Onion and the news content of CNN.
2. College Humor:
Probably best known for their YouTube videos including the hilarious, orange-scarf-wearing “Sassy Gay Friend”, College Humor is one of the funniest blogs out there. With a wide range of topics, including flying kittens, the latest activities of Miley Cyrus and a flowchart to determine if you should actually get that tattoo your parents have been advising you against, you’ll never be bored. CollegeHumor’s website offers videos, articles and a photo gallery.
1. The Oatmeal:
And coming in at number one is The Oatmeal. Created entirely by Matthew Inman, The Oatmeal consists of comics, stories and quizzes. It’s hilarious, entertaining and is the most effective way to procrastinate, since there are so many majestic unicorns, jitterbeasts, evil cats and mantis shrimp to read about. But if you’re going to read any of The Oatmeal’s ridiculously funny comics, read “My Dog: The Paradox”; it’s based off Inman’s own dog, Rambo, and presents all the confusing and amusing aspects of having a dog as a pet. You can even buy a stuffed animal of Rambo off The Oatmeal’s website, and the comic has been turned into a book as well.
So if all these blogs aren’t enough to distract you from that take-home history exam or those 50 calculus problems, there’s still plenty more on the internet to check out. Or feel free to start your own blog- anyone can do it! Until then, happy procrastinating!
