The Student Learning Center and All it Has to Offer

Grace Vaccaro, Staff Writer

Are you struggling in a course or looking for some extra academic support? The Student Learning Center on the second floor of Milne Library offers a plethora of aid and support to all students. Whether you are seeking help in understanding course material, improving your writing, or studying skills, the Student Learning Center has something to help any student succeed.

One main tool for students is the tutoring center. At the tutoring center, students can receive free tutoring in most 1000 and 2000-level courses. No matter what the course may be — from math and chemistry, to Spanish — there is a student tutor ready to help guide understanding and learning, not just receiving a good grade. The tutoring center is open Monday-Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Fridays, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., offering flexible appointment times throughout the week.

Olivia Retcho, a freshman economics major concentrating in finance, is a current tutor at the Student Learning Center. As an economics major, she has a passion for microeconomics. Tutoring has allowed her to “help others” and “explore a topic [she] loves further.”

Bella Yetto, a sophomore adolescent education math major, tutors students in math courses. Her favorite part of being a tutor is “helping students gain confidence in themselves and their skills in mathematics.” Olivia and Bella demonstrate how rewarding tutoring can be for the tutor and tutee.

For education majors, tutoring is a great way to gain experience in working with and supporting others. Many students assume that they must have perfect GPAs, but that is not true. Tutors aren’t expected to know everything — they are expected to provide support for their peers. Becoming a tutor is also a great way to develop interpersonal skills, professionalism, and improve your resume.

The tutoring center is also a part of the National Tutor Association (NTA). After becoming a tutor, they can attend workshops to receive the microcredential of the NTA. This credential can set candidates apart from others when applying to future jobs.

Carmen Nerio, the Student Learning Center coordinator, shared that the best thing about the center is the “variety that [they] have.” Many students are unaware of the resources and services on campus that can make a course much easier and provide “opportunities that students can take advantage of.”

The Student Learning Center has much more than just tutoring. The center offers academic coaches, the writing center, and math consultations. There are also workshops in writing and study skills, with many of the workshops offering LEAD Credit. Academic coaches aid in note-taking skills, test-taking strategies, test anxiety management, and more. The writing center can assist with written assignments like research papers and offer writing consultations.

The Student Learning Center is a great resource for all students. If you are struggling in a course, looking for some extra support, or to refine your studying skills, the Center has something for everyone. Stop by the Center or make an appointment on Tracktion to take advantage of all The Student Learning Center has to offer.
