Disney had been planning a live action remake of another one of their animated masterpieces “Tangled” but they decided to put it on hold indefinitely. The decision was made due to the underwhelming performance of “Snow White” in the box office. Before “Snow White” the live action remake tactic seemed to be working, but the failure of their most recent film and the remake of “The Little Mermaid” caused concern for how future remakes would do in the box office.
According to Deadline, “Snow White’s” underwhelming performance saw earnings of $69 million in The US and $145 million in the world after Disney spent a budget of $270 million on the film itself. That leaves Disney quite short of earning back what was spent and any additional profits they could have stood to make on the film.
The issues with the “Snow White” remake started long before the movie premiered in the box office. Casting choices upset longtime fans of the film and the horrific reviews left by critics largely condemning the film, yet praising Rachel Zegler’s performance as the only thing that was right about the film.
According to The Independent, The animated version of “Tangled” had a $260 million budget which was less than “Snow White” but turned a bigger profit of $592.5 million. Not only did Disney earn back the money spent on “Tangled” they also brought in additional profits that could have been spent to fund other projects on the drawing board.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly cited by Zachary Levi, voice of the charismatic Flynn Rider promoted Timothée Chalamet to take on his role as he felt he was a little too old to play a thief on the run. “I mean, he is already getting every other job, but probably Timothée Chalamet. Unfortunately I feel like I’m a little old and I don’t know all of the younger actors that could be that guy. I think it would be fun if Mandy and I got to be Rapunzel’s parents. I think that would be a really fun little cameo for us to pop into.”
Mandy Moore who gave her voice to the rule breaking Rapunzel gave her opinion on who would be the best Rapunzel. The Independent mentioned an interview she did with Elite Daily where she promoted singer and actress Sabrina Carpenter as the perfect choice for Rapunzel. “I could see her with 50 feet of hair or something. She looks like a Disney princess in real life. Maybe I could be Rapunzel’s mom. Let’s have a real mother-daughter duet, and have someone write an original song so we can talk about our differences and how hard it is to be a young person in this world.”
Due to the indefinite pause on the adaptation fans may never get to see the animated film come even more to life on the big screens.
