Womens Basketball: Oneonta VS Buffalo State

On December 6th, 2025, SUNY Oneonta’s Women’s Basketball played against Buffalo State’s Women’s Basketball. The head coach, Daphne Thompson, has entered her eighteenth season coaching for SUNY Oneonta and her thirty-third season as a collegiate head coach. Thompson, in her official bio for SUNY Oneonta, states, “I am proud of the women that I have had the opportunity to work with over the years and I am looking forward to seeing the development of future teams. Our goal is always to compete for a conference championship and return to the NCAA tournament. Additionally, we are focused on academic success and the continual growth of our women not only in the classroom and on the court but as strong, confident, leaders for the future.” Thompson is ambitious, but it is her ambition that led to such an exciting game this past Friday.

In the first quarter, SUNY Oneonta kicked it off by scoring the first two points. SUNY Oneonta kept their lead against Buffalo State throughout the first quarter. When the score read Oneonta’s eleven to Buffalo’s two, number ten on the Buffalo team had tripped a Oneonta player. This resulted in the first foul for SUNY Oneonta. The results for the first quarter are Oneonta’s seventeen to Buffalo’s seven. Oneonta had only received that foul with Buffalo having received two for that quarter.

In the second quarter, SUNY Oneonta scored the first points leading with twenty to seven. After Buffalo State’s first foul, Nadia Brown took the free throws awarded for the foul. Brown basketed one shot. Oneonta now has twenty-one points to Buffalo’s nine at this point. However, Oneonta’s team produced two fouls back-to-back. Buffalo number thirteen took the free throws, scoring them two more points. They now had eleven points to Oneonta’s twenty-one. Buffalo number ten had gotten to throw for the next foul. Unfortunately for Buffalo State, number ten missed both free throws. Emma Schwarzbeck had been on a roll this quarter, scoring two baskets back-to-back. Oneonta continued to lead with twenty-eight points to Buffalo’s eleven. When the score read Oneonta thirty to Buffalo nineteen, Nadia Brown had accidentally tripped over both Buffalo State’s number twelve and twenty-three. This quarter ended with Oneonta having thirty-three points to Buffalo’s twenty-one. Both teams received two fouls each.

The half-time show was presented by Oneonta’s Featured Twirlers who performed as a duet. Allison Belyea, a dietetics major in her junior year, and Kelsey Burke, an adolescent education major focusing on social studies in her junior year, work together as a duet. They both have been doing baton twirling for thirteen years where they have performed multiple half-time shows, parades, and a pep rally.

Now into the third quarter! This time Buffalo leads with the first scored points of the quarter. This looks like a promising start for them. However, as this quarter progresses, the game begins to feel more aggressive as there are many more fouls than in the first two quarters. Zuntag from Oneonta accidentally trips Buffalo’s number twelve resulting in both of them falling. However, Zuntag took the foul. Brown also accidentally trips a Buffalo State player, number thirteen, but she does not fall. Finally, Buffalo State’s number twenty-three attempted to pull the ball from Carlie Young’s hands. By the end of the quarter, Oneonta had received two fouls with Buffalo receiving five. The score by the end of the third quarter read with Oneonta having forty-six points to Buffalo’s twenty-nine. Despite Buffalo’s strong start, they were not able to close the gap in points.

Finally, the fourth quarter. This quarter relaxed in aggression. Zuntag led the quarter with the first two baskets giving Oneonta a total of fifty points to Buffalo’s twenty-nine.
