It was a successful week for SUNY Oneonta soccer, as both the Men’s and Women’s teams defeated their opponents. Both teams were coming off victories in the Mayor’s Cup the weekend prior, and were in high spirits to try and continue their strong starts.
The Oneonta Men’s team faced Sage College on Saturday looking to improve to 5-0 on the season, which they did in a tough battle against the Gators. The final score was 1-0. Oneonta showed off their high-powered offense with eight shots on goal in the first half, while Sage only had three. However, Sage was able to keep Oneonta from scoring in the first half.
Coming out into the second half, Oneonta was hungry for a goal and they got it in the sixty-ninth minute through Jeremy Pantoni. Pantoni’s first goal this season was assisted by Roberto Ventura, who slotted a nice pass through the defense before Patoni finished it far post. The rest of the game saw Oneonta stay aggressive, putting up another eight shots in the second half while keeping Sage to only two. The Red Dragons finished the game strong and look forward to continuing their winning streak against Rochester Institute of Technology this upcoming Saturday, Sept. 21.
The Oneonta Women’s team hosted Vassar College this weekend at Red Dragon field in a high-scoring game. Oneonta came out strong and managed to secure a 3-2 win in a tough battle against the Brewers. The first goal was scored in the twenty-second minute by Seaver Lipshie off a cross to the box from her teammate Christina Kornfeild. But Oneonta didn’t stop there, scoring again in the thirty-fifth minute off the boot of Kelsey Smith, scoring on a long shot from 30 yards out. Vassar didn’t fall too far behind, answering in the thirty-sixth minute off a header from Emma Tanner.
The second half continued with the same level of action we saw in the first half with Seaver Lipshie scoring again in the fifty-fourth minute off a free kick. Similar to the first half, Vassar did not fall far behind, scoring immediately after in the fifty-fifth minute off a deflection from an Oneonta defender. The final score was 3-2 in favor of the Red Dragons.
The Oneonta Women’s team will be facing Skidmore this upcoming Saturday. As for updates on all Oneonta sports, you can find all the stats, schedules, rosters, and more at oneontaathletics.com.
